Digital Waste Tracking Delayed
Date: 06/02/2025 | Environmental
DEFRA (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) today issued an update that the introduction of Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) will be delayed by a year.
Initially due to be implemented by April 2025, DWT will now come into effect in April 2026. Despite the delay, the update reiterates the position and goals of the four administrations that they remain committed to developing a UK-wide DWT service that supports the principles of a circular economy.
The delay comes following consultations and feedback from many of the industry’s stakeholders highlighting the “significant challenges” implementing the changes prior to the April 2025 deadline. The delay should also allow for the implementation of a new IT system that will be fit for purpose and give more confidence to those in the industry. Defra intends to carry out more robust stress testing on the capability of the required systems by engaging stakeholders and allowing phased access to ensure the system meets industry needs.
Industry will welcome the delay as there were concerns about how all those required to comply would be ready in a couple of months’ time.
